What Do Nationalists Want?

Nationalism often plays a part in how a country deals with other countries. Nationalists want trade deals that work in their country’s favor and don’t want to spend too much money to protect other countries. They often want to stay out of other countries’ problems too, unless it could make their country stronger.

In some cases, though, nationalists also have strong feelings about what happens within their country. Some nationalists don’t want to let immigrants in to their country. They also think everyone should speak the same language and share the same beliefs.

Facing the Facts

Language is often seen as an important part of national identity. For example, 70 percent of Americans believe that speaking English is an important part of being “truly American.”
