Living and Working Conditions in Sosfia's Sex Trade: The Independents

Whereas women who sell sex to Dominican men try to minimize the risks they encounter, risk taking characterizes the sex trade with foreign clients. The first big endeavor fraught with risks that these women undertake is making enough money to pay their rent. They must tangle with the police, which means risking arrest and paying bribes. They also must negotiate price and condom use with foreign clients (who might not speak any Spanish) and risk rape and beatings once they leave the safety of the bars. At the same time, however, they make their own hours and are indebted to no one.20 And unlike women who live in Dominican bars, women who rent houses or apartments live among Sosua's residents (as do women who rent rooms in boardinghouses, though to a lesser degree). Their neighbors, for the most part, are not sex workers. Thus these women are not socially isolated from the larger community, and they have the option of participating in Sosua's daily rhythms.
