Chapter 5

The Hand of Wisdom

When Tanya sat down, Vanessa reached over and placed her hand on Tanya’s hand and said, “You’re not alone. I just had an incident with my daughter, April. She got caught up in this whole social media scandal, and I didn’t see it. Sometimes teenagers can be a little hard to deal with, especially during their high school years.”

Vanessa’s Story

It was April’s first year of high school and as a freshman it was very frightening for her. She was anxious and excited at the same time to start high school. A week before school started, she and her best friend went shopping and purchased the latest trends in petite sizes. The weekend before, they went to the hair and nail salon. When she wore her dark-brown hair pulled up, a fresh face, and red lip gloss, it brought out her ivory skin tone and blue eyes.

The night before the first day of school, April hardly slept; she was up most of the night browsing her social media. All her friends had posted earlier in the day about how excited they were about starting high school. The short videos of them preparing for the first day as high school freshmen were hilarious.

The alarm clock went off, and it was time for April to get up. She prepared her clothes the night before, so it didn’t take her long to get dressed. However, her makeup routine took a little longer. After she was ready for school, she rushed downstairs to the kitchen and ate a bowl of cereal. Before heading out to the bus stop, she yelled upstairs, “Mom, I’m leaving for school!”

I walked down and said, “Have a good day at school. I’m sure you will adjust well, and you know some of your friends from middle school will be attending the same high school.”

I stood at the door until April reached the end of the street, which was her bus stop.

The first day of school went well for April. She was happy that her first period was with a girl she knew from middle school, and her lunch period was with her best friend, Taylor. After school, Taylor came over to the house, and they talked about their experiences while eating snacks. April liked most of her classes but was a little intimidated by her honors English class because of the workload. She knew it would require more discipline and study time. Taylor was happy with her classes, but she was disappointed that she didn’t know anyone in most of her classes. April reassured her that she would make new friends in no time. They talked about clubs they were interested in joining. Taylor mentioned the drama club because she had wanted to be an actress since she was a little girl. April thought it would be perfect for her, but she was thinking about trying something different, possibly the photography club.

Taylor replied, “That’s different since you enjoy being outdoors and singing. I thought you would try out for a sport or audition for the choir.
