Massachusetts

Yes, I’m a Massachusetts girl, born and raised in apple country, Littleton, which I’m proud to say recently celebrated its 300th birthday! If you go by on Route 495, stop and try Kimball’s Farm ice cream. It’s the best in the world, I think. I moved to Maine to go to Colby College, then came back permanently in 1989. But I still miss my little town on the Minuteman Trail.

I became cognizant of the existence of beer far before the craft beer movement began. I have a memory of tasting beer, probably a Carling Black Label or Narragansett, when I was 10 years old—that was 1963—when my dad let me have a sip. It was a midsummer day, one of those hot and hazy Saturday afternoons with the insects setting up a steady buzz outside, and the beige plastic radio on the kitchen table crackling with the sounds of Ned Martin’s voice and the Red Sox game.

Now for the beer. There are over 115 craft brewers in the Bay State, so get on your walking shoes, because you have a lot of work to do.

3cross Brewing Company

26 Cambridge Street

Worcester, MA 01603

“What happens when you blend a passion for bikes and beer?” That’s the tagline of this brewery. And what does the name mean? “3cross refers to the traditional spoke lacing pattern in a bicycle wheel,” they say. “Each spoke crosses three other spokes on its trip from the hub to the rim. What can we say? We’re bike people.”

Dave Howland and his wife, Jess, are getting cyclists and non-cyclists together in a roomy, stellar tasting room to drink great beer and cultivate community in their city of Worcester. One of the beers on tap is Batch #152, a Belgian dark strong ale with notes of toffee, treacle, currants, banana, and black pepper. 3cross doesn’t serve food, but they invite you to bring your own or order from local eateries.

Dan Rassi, Benjamin Holmes, and Ronn Friedlander (who recently earned his PhD in microbiology) are the owners of Aeronaut, and at the time I spoke with Dan, they’d been up and running for three months.

Located in a building that once housed the Ames Safety Envelope Company, Aeronaut shares the enormous factory space with 42 other tenants. In an innovative setting, the guys are making innovative brews. Quickly summarizing what I hear are spectacular beers, Dan says, “We have a huge range of styles running the gamut: wheat, hoppy, stouts, Belgians. Ben and Ronn are MIT students, so we’re introducing people to the science of making beer a little bit more than other breweries. We have an extensive yeast lab going on. Our taproom is huge, with the main draw being our events. For example, we had an Oktoberfest here last week with over 1,000 people in attendance and tons of food trucks. We also give full pours and growlers.”

Dan continued to list what he believes are the real draws to Aeronaut: “We have relationships with a lot of the people we get ingredients from, such as hop growers Four Star Farms in Northfield.
