Chapter 8

Garret knew even before he opened his eyes that Drew was at his side. He could smell the man’s alluring scent, and it made what he had to do all that much harder. Garret opened his eyes and glanced down at the head bent over his hand.

For a moment, Garret soaked in the feeling of Drew’s skin pressed against his own. When he had left Drew’s place earlier, he never even thought to see the man again, let alone feel his warm flesh.

The pain of it was almost too much to bear.

But he needed that soft touch as he cataloged his injuries. The memory of what Electus Everson had told him before he went into surgery played back in his mind. Garret knew he had lost his leg. And he knew that meant his life would change in many different ways.

That was an even better reason to send Drew away. Garret had worried before that he couldn’t protect his anamchara, and that had been when he was whole. Now, he was positive he couldn’t protect Drew.

He wasn’t the vampire he used to be.

And that meant he couldn’t protect Drew for whatever threats might come his way, not anymore. The gorgeous little human would be easy pickings for anyone with a grudge against humans.

Garret knew that Electus Everson and Alpha Gregory, as well as Electus Ucathya and his mate, were working very hard to make things equal in their world, but the fact of the matter was that they weren’t.

There was still a lot of hatred and resentment out there against humans, especially with Kalle Dane still on the loose, spreading his own brand of hatred. It wasn’t safe for paranormals or anyone associated with paranormals.

And that meant it wasn’t safe for Drew.

Garret knew what he had to do.

He held Drew’s hand for another moment, soaking in the feel of the man’s soft flesh against his own, and then glanced around for the call button for the nurse. The little red button blared at him like a beacon of misery. Garret reached over and pushed it, knowing he had no other choice.

He blinked rapidly to dispel the moisture gathering in his eyes and waited. When the nurse came in, Garret nodded to Drew’s honey-blond head and tried to extract his hand from Drew’s tight grip.

“He needs to go.”

The nursed paused like she wasn’t sure she had heard right. “Sir?”

“I want him escorted from the building.” Garret grit his teeth against the sharp pain those words brought him because he wasn’t done. “He is not to return.”

“But, sir…” The woman’s eyes dropped to Drew’s golden head. “The doctor told me that he is your—”

“I am perfectly aware of what he is, nurse.” Garret put a tone of stern censure in his voice so there would be no doubt that he was serious. “Now do as I say or I will have you reprimanded.”

The nurse blanched and rushed forward. For a vampire, being reprimanded was not a pleasant thing. Depending on the severity of the offense, it could get downright painful.
