CHAPTER 7
Checkpoint Charlie
Four days after the sealing of the border, President Kennedy decided to send a convoy to Berlinâthree hundred trucks loaded with artillery and fifteen hundred American soldiers. The convoy left from its base in Mannheim, West Germany. It traveled slowly along the autobahnâhighwayâthrough East German territory.
The United States was sending a message: America stood with West Berlin, and would protect it from communist aggression. By going through East Germany, the US was almost daring the communists to shut down land access to West Berlinâsomething they had not done since the unsuccessful Berlin blockade.
