CHAPTER 27

JILL’S USUAL SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

A few minutes had turned into ten and a second cup of coffee, this time in a disposable cup for Jill to take with her. After a slight delay where Babu had to climb up Bertha after Kevin and return the child to his mother, they set off towards the makeshift market in a park they had seen on their drive in.

Babu slid into the passenger seat, but Jill shook her head. “Rear turret, if you please,” she said to him. “If those creeps have stopped shitting themselves and take another swing at us, I want another gun able to shoot.”

The precaution proved unnecessary; the drive took just a few minutes, and this time no one got in their way.

The park was even busier than before, with around two hundred people milling about. Most were clustered near a line of open-faced tent stalls. At the end of the line was a stage, where a harassed looking man holding a clipboard addressed the small parts of the crowd that were paying attention. It would have looked like a normal farmer’s market except for the way that people moved: there was an air of tension that Jill could sense even from inside her truck. That, and the sheer number of weapons people were carrying.

Heads turned their way as Jill pulled Bertha up to the curb. There were a few other cars there, and Jill spotted someone elbow deep in another, presumably fixing it, but her truck was easily the meanest thing around.

“Okay, kiddos,” Jill said via her communication power. “Let’s go get shit. Babu, bring the loot from the back, would you?”

“Aren’t you, uh, worried about someone taking Bertha?” Mia asked. “I’ll stay up here and keep watch.”

Jill sighed, then excluded Babu from her mana’s grasp so he wouldn’t hear her reply. “Are you staying up there all day for a reason? Like, say, avoiding someone?” she asked Mia.

“Is it really that obvious?”

“Yes. Now get down here.”

The hatch popped open a moment later, and Mia slid down the ladder. “Let me guess,” she said to Jill, before the older woman could say anything, “you don’t want to deal with my bullshit, so suck it up?”

“Well, I was going to be nicer about it,” Jill said, then scrunched her face. “Actually, no I wasn’t.” She sighed, then asked with a dead voice, “Do you want to talk about it?”

“No. I want to shoot something.”

“Thank fuck. I’m sure something will try to eat us soon enough,” Jill said. She pinged Babu. “Did you get stuck back there?”

The door to the trailer opened and Babu stumbled through, his arms full of monster loot. He held the bison hides, horns, gems, and a few other bits of lesser creatures like fear deer and dire lemmings that they’d collected along the way. They formed a precarious pile that looked like it was one stiff breeze away from tumbling out of his arms.

“Huh,” Jill said. “More of that than I thought there was.” She
