Carrie Chapman Catt and her NAWSA group visited President Wilson. The women urged him to speak for an amendment to the Constitution.
Later that month, Alice—weak from hunger—and other prisoners were released from jail with no explanation.
All these events convinced President Wilson to take action. In January 1918, in Congress, he announced his support for a suffrage amendment to the Constitution. With that, Congress began to move forward. Even then, it took another year to win the votes needed in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
