 Nyasa. Touching, accompanied by visualization and sometimes also by mantra recitation, is also a common tantric practice. As we will mention further in Chapter Fifteen, there are a number of contemporary healing methods—such as Reiki—which are derived from tantric methods.

Touching may be done lightly as a gesture that charges the body with prana. A particular part of the body may be touched—often a part that is calling for healing—or the entirety of the body may be touched methodically, so as to energize it through awareness. For example, the areas of the chakras may be touched, accompanied by a form of blessing. Such a practice not only facilitates the flow of subtle energy, and releases obstructions and blocks, but also facilitates the practitioner’s awareness of this lifeforce.

Tactile stimulation is, of course, a method of touching that is not so light, but that is designed specifically not only to affect anatomical structures and functions, but also to elicit and mobilize the subtle energies within. These methods are more likely to be used in modes of tantric practice that use explicitly sexual methods (which is sometimes called “red tantra”), as contrasted with those modes in which the erotic nature of tantric meditation is practiced under conditions of abstinence (which is sometimes called “white tantra”).
