The New Map of Consciousness and the Neurosciences
NITAMO FEDERICO MONTECUCCO
IN EVERY PART OF THE WORLD we are witnessing today the birth of a global civilization with a global consciousness. Consciousness is the core of every living being and the key to human evolution. It is also the core of the paradigm emerging in field after field in science, culture, and spirituality. In this context, Ervin Laszlo presents in this book an important element, bringing together ancient spiritual wisdom and advanced scientific knowledge in a new paradigm in which consciousness is fundamental.
Two Paradigms
For centuries the old paradigm has divided consciousness from matter, the soul from the body, nation from nation, and science from religion, creating a world of divisions and wars without respect for the consciousness of human beings. Responsibility for the rise of ecological, economic, and social crises can be ascribed to the dominance of the old dichotomous paradigm. That paradigm is no longer tenable.
Today, we witness the constant and increasingly rapid development of a new way of thinking and living, a unitary paradigm capable of understanding the human being and all life in the integral way in which consciousness coexists with what we have called “matter” and forms a coherent whole. The emerging paradigm in science is part of a more ecological, humane, and sustainable trend in the world.
In this time of transition, we are observing an exponential evolution of research and understanding in the principal fields of science, such as physics, genetics, neuroscience and PNEI (psycho-neuro-endocrine-immunology). This supports the new paradigm and provides a unitary understanding of consciousness and its evolution from the level of quanta through proto-consciousness to developed human self-awareness.
The Old Paradigm and the Fragmented Neurophysiological Model
The dichotomous-fragmented model that forms the basis of the mainstream cultures is the philosophical and scientific expression of a human being without integrity—of an individual who experiences a deep inner division between body and soul, between heart and head, between male rational qualities and his female affective capacities, as well as between instincts and conscience. The dichotomous model results from a divided neurocognitive communication between areas of the brain, from a fragmented and dysfunctional interaction between the reptilian instinctive brain, the mammal emotional brain, and the human mental brain, and from a division between the brain from a fragmented and dysfunctional interaction between the reptilian instinctive brain, the mammal emotional brain, and the human mental brain, and from a division between the brain’s rational and the intuitive hemispheres. Neuroscientist Paul Maclean called “schizophysiology” this divided state of consciousness. As we shall see, this neurophysiologically fragmented communication is detected, recorded, and quantified as low coherence in the electroencephalographic (EEG) waves emitted by the brain.
The New Paradigm: The DNA of a Global Civilization
Science’s new paradigm offers a unitary conception of human being and existence. It is expressed by a person aware of his or her psychosomatic wholeness; a person living in a more natural and conscious way.
