America

Watching.

It was what they did.

It was what America was supposed to do.

“Intervention is never justified,” they had said after the business with Wanda. “See that it doesn’t happen again.” Except that didn’t really make sense, did it? Because right now she Watched, thanks to the power of cosmic windows. And what she saw?

She saw Venom join with Marc Spector to become a tool of the Whisperer.

She saw Venom and Marc sow chaos throughout New York City.

She saw another reality’s Marc Spector try to stem that very tide of chaos. And, she might add, not particularly well.

In Venom, she saw that not all was as it seemed. Venom was tasked by the Whisperer. That much was certain. And the psi-phon, it lay at the end of this collision course between Venom, this reality’s Marc Spector, the other incoming Marc Spector, and the Whisperer.

So many variables. So many possibilities. Not just in those involved with the situation coming to a head at the Top of New York Hotel, but with the psi-phon itself. A multiversal device of some sort, perhaps the only one of its kind in existence across every reality, but knowing all of that still left a lot of blanks to be filled.

America steeled herself, floating in the ethereal space as she stared through a cosmic window down at the hotel. Chaos for sure, but with a purpose.

Purpose.

She glanced down at her jacket. Simply wearing it again helped her sense of identity resurface. For so long, she existed just to Watch, and while Watchers had duties across all of time and space, they didn’t really get a lot done, did they?

America thought back to her younger self, the things she had accomplished, the setbacks she overcame, the friendships she made. All of that faded away as she became a Watcher, and for what?

All of the ability of a Watcher, yet without the most important ability of them all, regardless of species, age, or expertise:

The power to choose.

For now, America would Watch and not intervene. But that had little to do with the doctrine of the Watchers. Instead, this was a conscious choice to gather information, understand the situation with Venom, the different Marc Spectors, the Whisperer, and perhaps most importantly, the psi-phon. They all danced in a delicate balance, ripples across New York City, across this reality, across all realities.

Something was going to happen here. A breaking point would be reached. She would know it when she saw it. Once that played out, though, she would then hit a crossroads. Because the Multiverse itself would likely be at a crossroads.

Something would have to give.

Was America Chavez someone who merely observed? Or was she worthy of the jacket on her shoulders?

In that moment, America took a quiet breath and made a choice.
