Chapter

Nineteen

Hermes opened a portal to the null. With wings, I could keep up with him through the space, and my powers released. I could breathe.

He cut another portal into Nicky’s gymnasium.

I barely recognized the open gym. Currently, the space served as an emergency triage unit.

Witches, who were ambulatory, tended harpies and shifters. Leilani, a supernatural council member, was not only a demigoddess, but a medical doctor with healing abilities. She, along with Miriam, Gabriel, and Roxy, were over in a corner surrounding a cot with Jada in much of the same condition I’d left her.

Phyr must be transporting the others, I assumed.

I turned to Hermes. “Her father should be with her.”

“Agreed.”

The god unceremoniously dumped his load onto the floor.

Carlo scrambled to his feet and rubbed his arms. Through narrowed eyes, he took in the gymnasium.

Hermes wrapped an arm around my waist, drawing me to him. His mouth met mine in a crushing kiss. With his lips, he spoke of his reluctance to leave, his relief I was alright, and the promise he’d return to help me find Luke.

I touched my mouth as he broke it off, disappearing.

“The new guy is so insecure that he had to manhandle me and kiss you in front of me to show you’re with him now? Nice.”

I spun on Carlo. “Shut up. Shut your fricking mouth.” I gestured wildly at the makeshift infirmary. “You’re the reason all these people are hurt. You snitched on your own son to save your skin. I don’t ever want to hear a word from you again.”

Heads turned. More than one person glared at Carlo. He might’ve argued further. He wanted to make this my fault or belittle Hermes’s actions to cover how badly he’d messed up. The thing about Carlo was that he knew how to save his skin. His usual antics in private wouldn’t fly here. It didn’t surprise me one bit that he said what he said next because it wasn’t for me.

“I know now what I did was unforgivable,” he said to my back, “but you got to understand, I was at their mercy. I’m only a man. I’ve got no magic or anything to protect me from saying everything they wanted to hear. Maybe it was them that was affecting me all along. I’m sorry. I want to make this right. I want to help find our son before it’s too late.”

Part of me knew Carlo was probably a pawn in it all.

Dione appearing in my shop, Luke telling me he got a job that paid enough for me to come out, and Carlo giving me a Dear John on the same day almost at the same time couldn’t have been a coincidence.

For someone who could see the future, I didn’t see this coming. Apollo and Leto, and probably Dione, and who knew else, were all playing me. However, right now, Carlo said two very important words that caught my attention.

“Too late?”

The question had left my lips in a barely audible whisper as I turned to face him again.
