Elias was waiting in the waiting room at 8 AM when Ellen came in for the day. She greeted him with a hug and then paged Marta to take him down to a phlebotomy room and take his blood, which she did expertly. Elias didn’t even need the gauze after a few minutes. Then she sent him back to Ellen’s office where he had some orange juice from a carafe and a donut while she did her voicemail and email for the morning.

While she was doing that, Elias called Frankie on his burner.

“Bueno,” said Frankie.

“Frankie, it’s Elias Tucker. How you holding up?”

“Buenas Dias, Señor Tucker. Cartel come by asking questions last night. They begin to notice their mules disappearing. They want their product.”

“That’s not good,” said Elias.

“Yeah, you very perceptive,” sneered Frankie. “No wonder you FBI. You gotta get this solve soon, Señor Tucker! They holding my papa responsible for all the product going missing.”

“That’s something you should talk to Sheriff Funk about. Officially speaking, the Bureau has pulled me off your case. Privately though, I’m still working it. I’ll call Jim and give him my contact at the DEA.”

“No. No more Feds,” said Frankie. “They always make things worse. Even you, Señor Tucker, you no help to us. All you tell me is people dying. Puedo verlo, with my own eyes.” Then he asked, “This your new number?”

“Yes, it’s my number away from work. So I can talk to you and some of my other friends without the Bureau knowing about it right away,” said Elias.

“Bueno. Don’t call us, we call you,” said Frankie with finality, and beeped off.

“That sounded good,” said Ellen facetiously.

“Kids,” said Elias.

“I didn’t know you had any,” said Ellen. “You never mentioned.”

“No! No, not my kids. There’s a kid I work with. A young man. At the migrant camp. He’s kind of the manager there, and he’s under some pressure from the cartel,” explained Elias. “I can’t say I hold it against him. I would want some relief, too.”

“Well, how do you get it for him? You can’t really negotiate with the cartel.”

“Solve this case. That’s the fastest way. More than him, there’s a whole community down there who needs some relief. You probably treated most of them.”

“How do you move forward on the case?”

“I’m stuck I think,” said Elias. “I need some guidance. I need to ask someone who knows police work,” said Elias.

“Jim?”

“Yeah, but he’s out east for the week I think. I’ll call and see.”

“You could ask my cousin. He works out of the same office,” said Ellen.

“I didn’t know you had a cousin on the job. Who is it?”

“Deputy Gabe Rodriguez. He has a neat mustache and he’s maybe five foot six. Do you know him?” she asked.

“Yeah, a little. I talked with him at the Sheriff’s office and I think he was up at a function I attended over Labor Day.”

“Give him a call. He can help if Jim can’t.”
