âI pulled up everything I could about him,â Jed said. He tossed a stack of papers on the kitchen counter. Northâs chef had made Mexican for dinner, but we hadnât gotten to it yet.
After our meeting with Tank the day before, Iâd called Jed on the ride home. Iâd had nothing to share about the guy other than his name, general age and that he used to work the rodeo circuit. I had nothing else.
Jed had hung up and got to workâeven though it was a Sunday this impacted his womanâwhile I got nice and sweaty and exhausted tossing hay bales, then saddled up my horse and went for a ride until sunset. Iâd tried to avoid thinking about Tank⦠and Rory. I hadnât been able to get either out of my head.
Tank because he was a thorn in my side and Rory because she was⦠stuck there.
It had taken Jed a day, but heâd called us all together at the big house because he had something. It seemed his connections and background were consistently useful. Tossing money around was one thing, but access to the FBIâs databases was another. Him being part of the family meant less non-disclosure agreements. Less who knew what the fuck we were up to.
Weâd convened in front of the taco buffet. East and Ella had driven up from Bozeman for this because it was a big fucking deal. Neither had summer classes. Ella had graduated in May and her masterâs program didnât start until next month. East was on break so they were flexible. And East felt as I did.
Angry and pissed. Weâd sat across the booth from our father and all the man had cared about was money. Not us.
South and Maisey arrived a little while ago and the helicopter had just landed bringing North and Jed back from the corporate office. North hadnât changed because I was sure she was as anxious as we were. I didnât want to wait for her to put on sweats for the rundown. While Jed probably shared some details on the trip back, I was sure he wanted to tell all of us at once.
I wasnât the only one tense. Maisey was holding Southâs hand and East was sticking close to Ella.
Now was different than other times people had come after us for our money. North would sic the corporate lawyers on them and weâd never see them again. But this? There really wasnât any doubt with Tank being related since I looked exactly like him.
It was really fucking weird knowing what I was going to look like in thirty years.
âTravis âTankâ Million, born 1962 in Minot, North Dakota,â Jed began, reading from the top paper in his pile.
âHis name really is Million?â Maisey asked. Sheâd grabbed a glass from the cabinet and was on her way to fill it at the fridge water dispenser, but sheâd paused to ask.
âFucking ironic,â I muttered.
Jed nodded. âIt is. The details of schooling, parents and all that are in there.
