As they made their way across the city the crowds lessened as the spaces grew more open. An turned his focus inward toward his meager trickle of magic and allowed La-La to guide him. Centering, he charged his senses and extended them outward, seeking Jegerâs trail through the essence of the spire. His spirit surged. As they followed the Liffey toward Phoenix Park the trail strengthened.
La-La tried to draw him toward the Clanâs camp, but An tugged his arm out of her grip. His nostrils flared as he caught the faintest trace of Charlieâs scent wafting on the breeze. She was here, somewhere. Beyond Phoenix Park. Behind him he heard the electronic tones of a cell phone dialing but ignored it, his stride lengthening as he left La-La behind.
An tracked Jeger to an abandoned warehouse in the Ballymount Industrial Estate, south of the city, past the park. A fire had left the building a burned-out husk not quite a year ago. The walls were solid, but the roof was gone in patches and the windows altogether. The gaps in the walls had been boarded over, but one had been pried away, left prominently propped against the smoke-scarred wall.
Through with games, An Rógaire stalked up the path between the buildings and straight to the way left open for him. He went alone, unwilling to risk the Rom in this private battle. Though he envied them the promise of death they and all mortals held, he would not be the cause of them embracing that state before they must. Theyâd trailed him anyway, he could tell by their scent on the air, but for now they hid themselves among the surrounding buildings. It galled him that he could not stop them, but he found it a comfort as well.
As he walked past a bunch of brambles closest to his target, La-Laâs voice whispered from the brush, âNo fear, Lorcan. No matter what happens, the bastard wonât walk away from this with your spire.â Her vow touched him, as did her insistence on acknowledging his former self, but he could not let that distract him from his purpose.
âGo conquer your demon and when youâre done you will return to the Clan so we may heal your hurts. You and your friend.â He shook off her words and kept walking, but nonetheless they warmed his heart. The Kalderãs Clan might not be his own, but their solidarity lent him strengthâ¦and hope, misplaced as it was. An Rógaire wasnât really concerned about walking away tonight, as long as Jeger didnât either, but to know Charlie had a place to be safe. He nearly reeled with the relief he felt at that.
La-La must have Sensed his thoughts. She called after him in a low whisper, only loud enough to reach his sensitive ears. âI mean it, Lorcan. There is one who has joined the Clan who might heal even the most grievous of your wounds. You might recognize her name. She is called Anu...â
Anu? Surely he had not heard La-La correctly.
