When the phone rang a few hours later, I grabbed it immediately. I swiped to accept the call and raised the phone to my ear. "Yes?"

"I've got us an invitation for tonight," Talan said.

“Excellent. What kind of invitation?"

"That's the part you might not love. It's a weekend house party, and we’re invited to the entire thing."

"That's great! We'll have plenty of time to look around."

"True. But we will have to pretend to be a couple for the amount of time we're there. A weekend is a long time."

Oh, shit.

After what had just happened in his bedroom, pretending to be a couple was going to be tough. The opportunity for awkwardness was off the charts. And if we couldn't convince the fake queen we were the real deal, she could turn on us while we were alone on her turf.

That said, we didn’t have many options.

“Do you think she’ll believe we’re a couple?" I asked.

"Maybe. Traditionally, the mate bond is strong and hard to fight." I heard the slightest awkward pause on the line before he said, “Not that it's a problem for us, of course.”

Ouch. “Right. Of course.” I hoped he couldn’t hear how much that had hurt.

“I told her we wanted to have dinner with her to thank her for bringing us together,” he said. “But she could still be suspicious. We’ll have to be careful."

"So we could be walking into a trap."

"There's already a trap in my basement," he said, his tone tight. "Honestly, I'll feel safer on their turf."

I chuckled, but it was the dark kind of laughter that came when someone was joking about something bad. "Good point. What time do we leave? And what kind of clothing do I need for this thing?"

"We'll leave at 6:30. You'll need attire for dinner parties and casual.”

"All right. I can do that.” Thanks to Mia.

After I hung up with Talan, I went over to Mia’s place. Fiona braved the trip with me, reasoning that she was close enough to the house that if the portal went off again, she would still benefit from its proximity.

Mia let us into the café and put a little Closed For 10 Minutes sign on the door. She then led us upstairs and helped me put together the perfect wardrobe. Fiona sat in the corner, quietly observing. Worry tightened her features, and the sight of it fueled my determination to find out what was going on with the fae queen.

Once the wardrobe was packed away in one of Mia’s spare suitcases, she looked me up and down. "You need to shower before you go."

“Rude.” I grinned. "But you're not wrong. I'll go do that. Good luck with the café the rest of the night. And thanks again."

"Anytime." She gave me a quick hug and stepped back. "Since you're going onto fae territory with the demon lord and you won't have any backup, you should ask Rei what she might have to help you." She grimaced. “Like a transport charm to get you out of there if things get dicey.
