Chapter Thirteen

I was making nachos in the microwave when Kurt rang my doorbell.

“Hi,” I said, opening the door. “Do you like nachos?”

“Is there anyone who doesn’t like nachos?” He grinned. “I’m afraid I don’t have anything new to report. Even though I called him several times, Reggie Flax didn’t answer his phone.”

“That’s okay. He came into Lights, Camera, Action! this afternoon.” I was telling Kurt about my conversation with Reggie when the microwave dinged.

Before removing the nachos from the microwave, I got each of us a plate. “What would you like to drink?”

“Whatever you have. I’m not picky.”

I placed the nachos and plates on the table and poured each of us a glass of root beer. “We can have something more substantial later if—”

“No, this is fine. Thank you.”

We sat at the table, and I finished telling him about Reggie’s visit.

“That’s so weird that he believes my grandmother is dead because she was looking into Randolph Gianetti’s death. I haven’t seen anything, other than the Usual Suspects notebook, that would suggest she was investigating a crime.”

“Was there anything in there about who Imelda or any of the other members of the Usual Suspects believed killed Gianetti?” I asked.

He shook his head. “The only thing in that notebook was the list of names. I’m guessing that at some time or another, Gran decided to delve into the murder and then abandoned the notion as being pointless.”

“That, or there’s additional information hidden in your grandmother’s home.”

My phone buzzed.

It was Barry calling.

I wiped my hands on my napkin before answering the call. “Hi, Barry. I’m here with Kurt, Imelda’s grandson, and I’m going to make this a video call so we can all discuss what you’ve found.”

“Great. Nice to meet you, Kurt.”

“Likewise,” Kurt said.

I moved my chair next to Kurt’s so Barry could see and hear us both clearly when I set my phone up in front of us. “Do I need to take notes?”

“I don’t think so,” Barry said. “But I do have some interesting information. I found someone who worked on the case—he was a rookie at the time. He took a look in the file and said that there were two witnesses who gave statements about Randolph Gianetti’s death. They were Reginald Flax and Agnes Harper.”

My jaw dropped. “Are you kidding?”

“No, why?”

I told Barry about our encounters with both Reggie and Agnes. “What did the witness statements say?”

“The detective said Mr. Flax reported that Mr. Gianetti had been despondent and had been talking about committing suicide. Agnes Harper said pretty much the same thing—Gianetti had been depressed and hadn’t wanted to go on.”

“Oh, my gosh.” I raised my hand to my throat. “Is it possible one or both of them killed Gianetti? What if Agnes was really Gianetti’s ex-girlfriend? If she killed him, Reggie might’ve backed up the suicide story because he was glad Gianetti was no longer standing between him and Imelda.”

“But she’s the one who brought up the ex-girlfriend in the first place,” Kurt said. “Why would she
