CHAPTER FIFTEEN
âWhat now?â Kate said when we were back in the car waiting for Pat to pull out onto the road.
I groaned. âI was going to ask you the same thing.â
âIt wasnât Owen Campbell, was it?â
I shook my head. âIt doesnât seem like it. Not from the way he reacted. We need Pat to confirm when Walter left his facility.â
We got back on the road. Kate was fiddling with the radio when she suddenly slapped the dash. âAh no. I forgot to tell Pat about calling into the commune. Do you still want to go?â
âI donât know.â I sighed. âIs there any point? We didnât see anyone from the commune last night or this morning. Thereâs no link there.â
âAnd I canât imagine Derry had anything to do with them,â Kate said. âTheyâre squatting on that land. Itâs not like they can sell it to him.â
âThat must have driven him crazy.â
âNo doubt,â Kate said. âIâd say he was doing everything he could to track down the owner. But heâd have had no reason to approach the people living there.â
âThis is so frustrating. We need to know what was going on in Derryâs life if weâre going to track down the person who murdered him. There has to be something weâre not seeing. It seems like lots of people disliked him but thatâs not enough to go on.â I bit my lip. âSomething Owen said stuck with me. He met Derry coming from the direction of the hotel. What was Derry doing down there? Nothing was open. I went for a walk this morning and saw that for myself. Is there a property down there he could have been selling?â
âNothing has sold lately. And thereâs nobody living down there except Cliona in the B&B.â She turned to me excitedly. âYou said she reacted badly when you said who you were. Are you sure she didnât mention Derry?â
I nodded even though it felt like a long time ago, I remembered everything Cliona said clearly. Probably because it had been one of the weirdest encounters of my life. âIâm certain. She got a strange look in her eyes but she didnât say anything about him.â
âWhat I donât get is how he ended up in the hotel. Cliona wouldnât have had a key. So how could she have got him in there?â
I shook my head. âWhat we need is his phone. Thatâll tell us who heâs been in contact with.â
Kate baulked. âAre you mad? We canât go to a crime scene and start rifling through his pockets. Especially not you. And Iâm not doing it either. There are laws against that sort of thing.â She smirked. âThere should be laws against flowery hammers too.â
I laughed despite my frustration. âOh, I agree with you. Tell that to my colleague who gave it to me. Iâll definitely never accept anything like that again.â
âGood. Thatâs one less stereotype in the world at least.â A smile played on her lips. âYou know, Derryâs house is coming up on the left.
