Chapter 9

JESSIE WOKE UP IN THE early afternoon after a fitful sleep with sandy eyes, a throbbing headache from sleep deprivation and nerves, a sense of impending doom, and the realization that she was not alone. Greta sat cross legged at the foot of the bed holding two mugs of coffee.

“Morning, sunshine!” Greta grinned as she held out a mug.

“I love you dearly, but what the hell are you doing here? I thought you were in London. And why are you so perky?” Jessie grumbled, taking the coffee and sipping it gratefully. “Mmm. This is good.”

“I’m perky from sleep deprivation, jet lag, and too much caffeine, so I stopped off at that cafe in Paris we like for even more caffeine because why not? Don’t worry, I’m charging my portal key. I decided that I want to see the Puck for myself. I think I know what was used to bind him. I found a spell to break it, but it’s going to take all four of us and Mara to make it work.”

“Four?” Jessie squinted at her friend in confusion, still trying to clear the cobwebs from her mind.

“I brought Isabel. She’s chatting with Charlie at the bar now. She may never leave. She’s never gotten to really talk to a ghost who embraced his ghostdom.”

“Ghostdom?”

“Okay, you need more coffee. And probably a shower. Go get ready. We need to see who we know that’s a water witch who can come with us.”

“Water witch?” At this point Jessie was just being annoying. It worked.

“Yes! Fire, earth, air, water. You fire, me earth, Isabel air. Need water. Go get ready! Stop repeating everything I say with a question!”

“Question?”

“Jessie!”

Jessie shrieked and scurried out of bed, miraculously saving the coffee, as a pillow flew past her ear.

“What about your friend, what’s-his-face? The witch who moved to Puerto Rico to teach surfing,” she called from the bathroom.

“Ivan? I can probably get him to come. I’ll see what he’s up to. Now get ready!” Greta yelled back. Patience was never her strong suit.

Jessie grinned as she started the shower, drowning out Greta’s call to her witch buddy. Ivan and Greta had been friends for centuries. Originally from Scandinavia, Ivan had moved to the Americas early on at a time when men with the gift of Seidr were considered unmasculine and often put to death.

Twenty minutes later, Jessie was dressed, unceremoniously shoved into Greta’s ancient Volvo that was usually kept in a garage behind Jessie’s house, and on the way to the bar. When they walked in, Isabel and Ivan were engaged in a rapt conversation with Charlie. He looked up and beamed at Jessie.

“Hey, Jess! They want me to help with research into ghost and spectral abilities!” he said, glowing a faint rosy hue.

“Why is it when I bring up research you start talking about spirit abuse and being turned into a lab rat but when Isabel asks it’s all something to be proud of?” Jessie protested.

“Because I’m nicer,” Isabel replied, smoothing out the front of her slacks as she stood up and came to Jessie for a hug.
