It only took Mira a moment to spot her target, chatting with the eighth-grade teachers by the drinks table. Principal Sloane swayed back and forth and laughed a little too loudly, almost like she was nervous about something. Or someone.

Sure enough, there were her keys, right where they always were: hanging from her belt loop in a tangle of silver and gold. There was no way Mira would be able to walk right up and take them, of course. She’d have to create a commotion. But Mira Epstein-Patel always came prepared, so she had a plan for that.

She zeroed in on the key chain’s hook, so she knew exactly where it was and wouldn’t have to fumble around for it. She would probably only have a split second to grab it.

Mira took a deep breath. Then she turned around, started laughing uproariously, like something was absurdly funny, and bolted. Straight toward the drinks table.

Beverages flew in every direction. Mira crashed to the ground at Principal Sloane’s feet.

“Mira Epstein-Patel!” the principal shrieked. “What on earth!”

“I’m so sorry! So sorry!”

The eighth-grade teachers were busy trying to mop up the huge puddles of fruit punch and soda. Principal Sloane helped Mira to her feet. Mira made a show of slipping on the wet floor, and as she grabbed for Principal Sloane’s arm to support herself, she slipped one hand behind the principal’s back.

Her fingers landed on the keys.

One swift motion, and she had them. She pulled her hand quickly behind her own back, and shoved the entire key chain and its contents into her back pocket. She’d worn pants with pockets under her party dress just for this very reason.

“Mira Epstein-Patel, this is a dance, not a wrestling match! What on earth were you thinking?”

“I know. I’m so sorry! I wasn’t looking where I was going, and I just . . .” Mira put on her most sheepish face and shrugged. “This dance is just too much fun, I guess.”

Principal Sloane glared down at her. “I think you need to go, Mira. I’ll escort you out.”

“That’s okay! Really! I’m leaving. So sorry! Very sorry!”

Mira hustled away from the table as fast as her feet would carry her.
