SMITTY’S CHAIR WAS empty when I hurried back through the reception area and out into the cold. On my drive out to the main road, I saw that the men at minimum security were in the yard, breathing out clouds of steam, hopping in place or jogging along the fence to get warm. The tans of their boots and uniforms blended seamlessly with the ground, giving the impression that the men had been pushed up from the frozen dirt. Topping each man’s head, blazing through the gloom like a roadside flare, was a fluorescent orange knit cap. It was mesmerizing. In spite of myself, I slowed the car and gaped at the scene. Of course, a few of the guys pulled their hands out of their pockets and strutted toward me, gesturing and saying things I couldn’t hear through my closed window. I tore my gaze away and pressed on the gas, but the image of the prisoners in their screaming-orange caps haunted me, like they had been corralled and kept there for my personal amusement. It made me feel ashamed.

As I headed north on the highway, Daisy’s absence throbbed like a phantom limb as it did every Sunday evening, only this time I felt the presence of every person involved with her training: the breeders who set her on this course; the volunteers in the puppy house; Captain Lefebvre; Christy; and Keith, especially Keith. Daisy’s failure would hurt each of them, but Keith, I now understood, had the most to lose.
