“What’s going on, Dad?” Jared asked his father since he wouldn’t come out and just say what was bothering him.

“Son, I couldn’t find a way to tell you this over the phone.”

“Tell me what?”

“Your mother…” He sighed heavily, slid his hands in his pockets and looked down at the cobblestone brick they were standing on. “She’s sick again. She had pneumonia, fought that off, but I think it took a toll on her body, especially after everything she’s already been through.”

Jared grew incensed. “She’s at the hospital right now by herself?”

“No. Juliette’s there with her.”

“Why aren’t you there?”

“Because I came here to talk to you first before we head over there together. I didn’t want you to go straight there without knowing what was going on. Look, son. She—” His father swallowed the massive lump in his throat. His eyes watered. “They don’t think she’ll make it out of there this time around.”

“What?” Jared asked in shock. “I just saw her three months ago, and she was fine. Now, you’re telling me she’s too sick to leave the hospital?”

“Yes.”

Jared sighed, closed his eyes and shook his head. “I don’t believe this.”

“Trust me—I say those words every day,” he said. “Come on. Let’s head over there. I told her you would bring KeShana by. She wants to meet her. When she has the energy, it’s all she talks about—how proud she is that you’ve found love.”

“Yeah,” he said, feeling crushed. What he had with KeShana wasn’t love at all. “Let’s—let’s ah…let’s go.”

“You can follow me over there, son.”

“Okay, Dad.”
