CHAPTER 11

I knew Melissa Cooper worked at the jewelry store in town, so Stormy and I decided to drop in and say hello to see what we could find out. Jack Howell had said Toby was having an affair with her, and I was having a hard time believing it.

“Do you think it’s true?” Stormy asked as I pulled up to the jewelry store. “I just can’t see Toby cheating on his wife. He was such a—an upstanding, good guy.”

I nodded. “It seems weird to me, too. Maybe it isn’t true. But if it isn’t true, I’m not sure how we’re going to find out. I mean, if she’s not having an affair. Why would she mention anything?”

“And if she is having an affair with him, she’ll be keeping it to herself,” she said as she unbuckled her seatbelt.

I nodded. “Exactly. We may not get anything out of her, but let’s see if we can try.” It was surprising sometimes what people would tell you if you just struck up a conversation with them. Everyone in town knew I was marrying Cade and that he was the local detective. So if there was a crime committed, people wanted to talk about it. They wanted information from me sometimes as much as I wanted information from them.

The jewelry store was empty except for Melissa, who was wiping fingerprints from the glass counter. She smiled when we walked in.

“Good morning, ladies,” she said. “How are you?”

I nodded. “Good morning, Melissa. We’re doing great. How are you? I haven’t seen you at the diner for a while. I hope you aren’t cheating on us with another restaurant.” It was out of my mouth before I realized what I was going to say.

She smiled, but there was a sigh that came with that smile. “I’m doing all right. Work has kept me away from the diner, but I promise to drop by soon. What can I help you with?”

“I just wanted to look at some of your pearl jewelry. I already have my jewelry for my wedding, but Cade and I are going to Paris for our honeymoon, and I thought it would be fun to have something to wear when we go out to dinner.” It was the truth, and it was a good reason to drop by the jewelry store. I just wanted something simple that I could wear to a nice restaurant.

Her eyes lit up. “You’re going to Paris? I am so jealous. I’ve never been there, and it’s my dream destination.”

I smiled. Melissa was young, tall, and blond. Everything Brenda wasn’t. “Every woman needs to go to Paris at least once in their life.”

“Ah, Paris, the city of romance,” Stormy said dreamily. “But I haven’t been there either, so I’m in the same boat as you are, Melissa.”

We headed over to where the pearl jewelry was. “Good, I was feeling like I was the only person in the world who had never been,” Melissa said. “Rainey, what were you looking
