Chapter 14

Rosemary

After lunch, we return to the lounge room and a fresh pitcher of mimosas. Thyme takes a nap, Sage reads a book, and I fret. A suspicion’s been building in my brain, and it’s threatening to burst out of my mouth.

I manage to keep my lips firmly closed until the smiling aesthetician comes to escort Sage to her facial appointment. Seeing my chance, I elbow Thyme awake.

“Ow.” She glares me and rubs her ribs. “What was that for?”

“It’s time for our facials, but I need to talk to you first.”

She yawns, stretches, and looks around. “Where’s Sage?”

“On her way to get her facial. Wake up and listen to me for a second.”

“I’m listening.”

“I think Roman’s mom is trying to derail the wedding.”

I sit back and watch her face for a reaction. She scrubs her hand over her eyes then rubs her forehead.

“What are you talking about?”

“Think about it, Thyme. Trina would know all about the Lyman curse. She lives on St. Helena Island and has easy access to all the service providers who’ve been flaking out on Sage. She might even have a spare key to Roman’s car. It’d be a piece of cake for her to steal the rings.”

Thyme raises her arms over her head and stretches to her left. She repeats the motion on her right side.

“Solid theory, Rosemary. Just one question.”

“Yes?”

“What earthly reason would Roman’s mother have to try to screw up his wedding plans?”

I nod. “Right, motive. I’m glad you asked. She doesn’t want to see Roman marry a woman who lives on Hilton Head Island. She might lose him. You saw how Hunter treated that poor woman at the pool. There’s a big divide between the two islands.”

She makes a soft hmming noise and tips her head from side to side. “Sage did sort of say she and Trina aren’t that close, didn’t she?”

“She certainly implied it. It’s clear Denise and Roman’s grandmother love Sage. But I never hear anything about his mom.”

“No, she mainly talks about …”

“Chip and Muffy,” I finish for her. “Which is another reason Trina would be against the wedding. Marrying Sage just solidifies Roman’s connection with the Moores and makes his dad and stepmother an even bigger part of his life than they already are. If I were Trina Lyman, it would tear me apart to watch the son I raised singlehandedly getting so cozy with the dad he never even knew.”

She bobs her head again, more enthusiastically this time. “Maybe. But what do you suggest we do about it?”

The door to the lounge swings open.

“Thyme? Rosemary? Are you ready to get your glows on?”

I flash the aestheticians a quick smile and whisper in Thyme’s ear. “You and I are going to go to Frogmore tonight and poke around.”

She gives me an uncertain look, but I pretend not to notice. I extend my hand to the closer of the two women standing in the doorway.

“Hi, I’m Rosemary.”

“I’m Kelly. It’s so nice to meet you.”

We walk through the door while Thyme and her facialist get acquainted.
