Chapter 8
Later that night I was sitting in my apartment watching a cooking show and eating some microwave popcorn when I heard a knock on my door. Despite basically living where I work, it wasn't a common occurrence. My staff would text me if they needed me and Missy or my mother would just barge in. That meant it could only be one person - Jack.
I opened the door and ushered him in, offering him a beer from my refrigerator and my bowl of popcorn. He sat down next to me on the couch and didn't say anything for awhile, just munching away at the salty, buttery goodness before us and sipping at his beer. It was only when the show finished that he finally spoke.
"I told Andrea that she could leave town. I'm guessing she'll check out sometime tomorrow. She's a permanent resident of this area and a business owner, so if I have any questions I should be able to find her."
"When she asked me I didn't know what to tell her."
He shrugged and placed the almost empty bowl on the coffee table. All that was left were the hard kernels and I didn't like those much. "It's fine. I can't really stop her and I'm guessing she knows that. I thought it was nice that she even asked."
I wasn't as sure as Jack was that Andrea knew but it didn't matter if he was okay with it.
"I hate to ask the obvious question, but how is the case going?"
"About like you would expect. Pretty much everyone disliked Vivian so they had a motive."
"Alvin didn't. Neither did Dylan."
"Okay, she had two people who didn't hate her guts. Everyone else? Loathed her."
"She didn't seem all that bad at Lane's house. She was almost...nice."
"What I've learned about her would curl your hair, Tedi. She's not nice."
I pulled at a red curl and watched it spring back. "Uh, I've already got those curls covered."
Chuckling, Jack shifted on the couch, stretching his long legs. "Then it would straighten your hair. Vivian Dashwood had a mean streak a mile wide. I received the background on her from my buddy in Chicago and it was eye-opening. She was mean to other authors, crappy to business partners, and worse to her own family. The only people she treated halfway decently were her readers and that was because she kept them at armsâ length. I assume so they wouldn't see what she was really like. Trust me when I say that there are no shortage of people that are happy to see her dead. The suspect list is a mile long."
"Can't it be cut down to who was at the wedding?"
"Theoretically, yes. Although someone who wasn't invited could have snuck into the reception. I noticed that you haven't put any security cameras around the convention center yet."
"So this is my fault?"
I'd been meaning to do it but with the wedding and everything...
"Not at all. It would just make things easier if I could confirm that no one else was there.
