“You look a little shocked,” Mary said to me. “Why?”

“A bracelet like the one you described was found in a house near where Brad’s body washed ashore—the house he and Lisa apparently owned together. Did you know that?”

“No. I’d be happy to take a look at it, although why it would turn up now after twenty years, I can’t imagine.”

I found the picture on my phone.

“This isn’t my work,” Mary said. “It’s much grander than what I do—and I don’t work in gold.”

“Thank you,” I said. “We understand Shannon has been in Apalachicola recently, and that you may have witnessed a confrontation between her and Lisa.”

“Dawn told you that, but it was actually my granddaughter, Chloe, who saw it. She reported it to me. I don’t get out much and I’m no longer interested in gossip. I spend the day in my studio if I’m feeling well and upstairs in my apartment if I’m not. Chloe can probably tell you about it word for word.”

Mary stood and walked to the curtain that separated the front of the store from the backroom where she worked. “Chloe, can you come back here for a moment?”

Chloe finished with a customer and joined us in the backroom. “What is it, Grandma?”

“You know all the gossip about the murder of Brad Arborough, and you saw what happened between Lisa and Shannon. These folks want to hear about it.”

“There wasn’t much to it, Grandma.”

“Was there a scene?” Mary asked. “There always seems to be a scene when Shannon is around.”

“They actually seemed to be commiserating over Brad’s death—they hugged each other.”

“That’s odd,” Mary said, “I didn’t think the two of them could be in the same room together, and the idea of their hugging one another—that’s almost unimaginable unless one of them had a knife with plans to stab the other.” She chuckled. “Murder seems to make strange bed fellows. Thanks, Chloe—you can get back to the customers.”

“We won’t keep you a lot longer,” I said, “but do you know much about Lisa Arborough?”

“Almost nothing except that it was always clear that Lisa and Shannon hated each other. I know Lisa comes to Cape Azul most summers and spends time in town. She seems to like my jewelry and may have bought a piece of two.”

I nodded, thanked her, and Mason and I went back to purchase our water colors from Chloe.

I decided to show Chloe the picture of the bracelet. “Have you seen anything like this? Your grandmother told us about an old diamond and emerald bracelet she’d made, but she said this wasn’t it.”

Chloe looked at the photo. “This doesn’t look like her work. And if she says it wasn’t her work, then it wasn’t.” She handed me back my cell. It seemed to me she had more to say.

“What is it?”

“It’s probably nothing. I heard from a friend that a bracelet was found in Brad’s house on Cape Azul. Is this the bracelet?”

“Yes. What do you know about it—or what does your friend know?” Mason asked.
