Chapter 12

It took no time at all to get all the preparations done for our trip to Dunara. Lyan and Dryan headed back to Frostburn. I promised to bring them good news the next time we met. They assured me they would tell me every detail of the Jarl’s coronation and save some drink for me. We decided that the one hundred men I would take to Dunara wouldn't use the specter magic. The truth sayers claimed through Savoyran that it was too dangerous for them to keep the portal open for days or weeks on end, because of Frostburn’s weather. They also claimed that they could only open portals to areas along the south of Fulgrem for now, so maintaining the specter magic in Dunara wasn't possible.

That meant that the hundred men I could take would be mortal and had to come from Frostburn normally. They asked for volunteers and it surprised me that nearly everyone wanted to go with me, so they picked the first hundred that asked. One of them mentioned that they wanted to stay on Asterlia as long as possible as Frostburn was becoming more and more unbearable. I supposed I needed to see it to know the extent of the white rain.

Finally, after feeling like a fool in this chain mail that was too short for me, I had my armor back, the spare one at least. It fit me like a glove and I rejoiced as I had a battleaxe that balanced to my tastes. I discarded the one I had been carrying before, one of the other men wanted it so I gave it to him instead. I felt like I was finally in control again, other than the lack of prime ability, I was ready to take on anything.

We were still in the local lord’s manor, and the fires had receded. Dryan and Lyan had taken everything back to Frostburn so that left only me and the volunteers here. The lord had been the last to hang and had been the loudest in his pleas to not kill him. Once the deed was done, we discarded him in the pile of bodies that had stacked up with the rest of his men.

“Ready to get going?” I asked Lunara and Eliandra, who had been watching me put my armor on.

“Ready as I can be,” Lunara said. Eliandra nodded as she stared at me, her hands clasped together in front of her.

I went to fetch my helmet, which I had left on the floor as I suited up in my armor and placed it over my head. I looked over at the woman and spread my arms.

“What do you think?” I asked, my voice perhaps sounding deeper with the helmet on.

Lunara had her eyebrows raised and I couldn't tell Eliandra expression through the mask too well but she seemed surprised too.

“You look terrifying. Like something out of a nightmare, just like the rest of the soldiers I suppose,” Lunara admitted which I laughed at.
