CHAPTER SEVEN

Lorelei waited outside Dom’s office while Ham related the information about the conflict he had seen between Bruce and Henry and the other members of their group. She’d told Ham that she would remain there while he was giving Dom every last detail of the incident he observed.

She didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to hear what Dom might think about the argument between them. Already, it appeared that motive for Pearl’s murder existed among the gardening community. She wanted to hear firsthand if there was any chance the fight between the bingo players might stoke Dom’s suspicions in another direction.

However, she didn’t want him to think that she had her hands in everything that was happening. When she heard the door open, she expected it to be Ham and was surprised when Dom was the first one out.

“Lorelei, I didn’t expect to see you here.”

“I’m uhh, I’m just moral support for Ham,” she said.

Dom stared at her for a moment, then gestured to Ham. “It looks like he needs it.”

She glanced up for the first time, and her eyes went wide. Ham’s face had turned the color of a ripe tomato. Sweat beaded above his brow and rolled down his cheeks.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

“You don’t look so good, buddy,” Dom said. “Why don’t we get you to the infirmary?”

“I don’t need to go to the nurse’s office,” Ham said, sounding a bit like a petulant fifth grader. “I just need some fresh air. Lorelei, will you take me to the rear deck?”

“Of course I will.” She wrapped her arm around his waist and led him away from the senior crew offices.

“Thanks for getting me out of there,” Ham said when he had recovered a bit.

“Believe me. I understand completely how being around Dom can leave you feeling a little hot under the collar.”

“Lorelei,” Ham said as the color returned to his face. “You and I are on completely different planets when it comes to our reaction to one Mr. Dominic Garcia. All of this has nothing to do with how he looks under that mop of silver and black hair.” He passed his hand in front of his face in a circular motion.

“Oh.”

“Sweetheart, that’s your department. My sudden reaction has nothing to do with Dom.”

“What’s wrong, then?”

“Dom shared something quite disturbing with me,” Ham whispered. “My anxiety is unhinged at the moment. You just witnessed the effect.”

“I’m so sorry, Ham. I had no idea you suffered from high anxiety.” She rubbed the top of his shoulder to comfort him.

“I don’t typically, but finding out that a passenger aboard this vessel was more than likely murdered really sets it off, it would seem.”

“Wait a minute,” Lorelei said. “Dom told you he believes, for sure, Pearl was murdered?”

“That’s exactly what he said,” Ham answered.

“Something must have changed. We just spoke, and he said he was unsure of what had actually happened.”

“I’m not sure if I’m supposed to share this with anyone, but Dom just told me the initial examination of Pearl’s body revealed that her throat had swollen shut.
