A few days later, I had everything set for the fifteen restaurants. Well, one dessert at least. Some were getting a cake roll and others were getting fancy eight-inch cakes decorated pretty but then cut so they could stand on their side. It was a cool thing that people liked, and then it was fun to decorate front and back, plus the circle “top.”

They were all happy they got their exclusive option, especially those with top-forward cakes since they were trendy.

The twins were happy at the PR and fun on social media to get the hype going.

And I was exhausted. We really did need more help and fast.

Things worked out with Maya’s sister, Karime, and she was moving this weekend and getting training Monday. That gave her Tuesday off and hopefully Wednesday should at least be help to Susie while getting up to speed. For the first week, she would work the same time as Susie, but after that, she was going to be eight in the morning until three in the afternoon so we had more help later too.

It was nice that it all worked out.

What wasn’t working out was getting Robyn and her son away from her abusive husband. She’d managed to talk to Justine on the side, but her husband had been even worse than normal since she’d been having so much freedom away from him and his security. I was seconds from just grabbing them and making her think she managed to escape to a waiting car.

The twins felt the same from the looks they were giving me.

I had one more thing to handle before we could leave and pretend we were flying to DC for the concert. One of the officers who showed up the night I was attacked had their first child. Kary saw it on social media and the baby girl was doing well, but the delivery was early, so they couldn’t take vacation time yet. My answer was to make a bunch of treats for the station to welcome their new addition.

To be fair, my answer was normally food.

Crying stopped me in my tracks. I glanced around and saw Susie leaning against the back of the building close to the street where she normally parked. I hurried over to her to see if she was hurt and inadvertently startled her.

“Sorry, I’m so sorry, Arabella,” she rasped, trying to mop up her face.

“Whatever for?” I whispered, grabbing her arm when she turned away. “Susie, what’s going on? Are you okay?”

“No, no, I’m not,” she choked out before letting out a sob and hugging me.

I had no idea what to do, but I simply comforted her as I did the twins. I ran my hand over her back and told her everything would be all right, that she was stronger than she thought, and would make it through.

It took several minutes, but then she finally settled. I let her go when she pulled away and made some tissues appear in my pocket and handed them over to her.
