Rafe followed Korrine back to her apartment and insisted on coming inside to check for anything out of place.

She stood in the middle of the living room and watched him, a deep frown marring her brow. “What gives, Santiago?” she demanded.

He inspected the alarm panel next to the front door. “Is this activated?”

“Yes,” Korrine snapped in exasperation. “Don’t avoid my question. Why have you been acting so overprotective lately? And another thing. Last night when I came home, I noticed a police cruiser parked right outside the building, and again this morning when I left.” Her eyes narrowed suspiciously. “Do you have SAPD watching me?”

“Korrine—”

She gave him a level look. “What were you saying earlier about not keeping important things from me?”

Rafe sighed heavily. “I have reason to believe that Charles Lee Granger is conspiring to have us murdered.”

The news gave Korrine a jolt, but she kept her tone even. “How do you know this?”

“It’s not important.”

“Of course it is. If we can prove that Granger is involved in a plot to assassinate two federal agents, we can nail him. At the very least, we can haul him in for questioning. Who knows? We might even get a break in the case.” She pursed her lips, eyeing Rafe. “Are his phones tapped?”

“No.”

“Then how did you obtain this information?”

Rafe hesitated, a muscle flashing in his jaw. “Eduardo Contreras.”

Korrine’s eyes widened. “The crime boss? Leader of La Niebla?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t understand. Why would Contreras tell you of all people about Granger’s murder plot?”

“We have history.”

Something in that low, taciturn response aroused Korrine’s curiosity. At the same time, she felt a prickle of unease. “What kind of history?”

His eyes grew veiled. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Rafe—”

“Leave it alone, Korrine.”

“All right.” She folded her arms, her head cocked to one side as she studied him. “At least tell me why we should trust anything Contreras says. We didn’t exactly ingratiate ourselves to him by arresting key members of his posse. What possible reason could he have for warning us that our lives are in danger?”

Rafe gave her a faintly mocking smile. “Don’t lawyer me, Korrine. You just asked the same question twice, worded differently.” Before she could retort, he continued, “Believe me when I tell you that Eduardo Contreras has never lied to me. He’s a corrupt, murdering bastard without a soul, but he’s never lied to me. He knows about the assassination plot because he overheard a phone conversation between Granger and his own second in command, Giancarlo Espinosa.”

“He actually overheard Granger and Espinosa plotting our deaths?”

“Apparently.” Rafe paused, as if trying to decide how much information to disclose. “There were photographs.”

A fine chill whispered across her skin. “Of what?”

“You.”

“I see.” She drew a deep, shaky breath and walked over to the sofa. She didn’t immediately sit, but stood with her arms crossed as she contemplated the shiny oak floor, anger and dread swirling in her chest. It wasn’t the first time she’d been targeted for murder, she reminded herself, and it wouldn’t be the last.
