LATER THAT MONTH, JENKINS sent another mass email touting the unit’s work.

“I want to thank the members of the Gun Trace Task Force personally,” Jenkins wrote on July 22, 2016. “I push and ask a lot of them on a daily basis and they continue to come to work every day and arrest individuals for firearms. I truly believe without a doubt that the following members have saved lives and prevented violent crime from occurring through their dedication and work ethic.”

“Your leadership is what builds greatness. Keep pushing and stay safe,” Deputy Commissioner Dean Palmere wrote back. “Wayne, you are truly the engine that drives the train. Thank you for your leadership,” said Lieutenant Colonel Sean Miller. “Jesus Christ! You need to be called ‘future Commissioner Jenkins,’ ” said another officer. “Great work, Lt. Wayne!” wrote a supervisor overseeing promotions in the administrative deputy commissioner’s office.

Jenkins, of course, was still a sergeant. The sender was alluding to Jenkins’s recent efforts to be promoted. He had taken the lieutenants’ exam and was number 18 on the list. “You think it’s possible?” Jenkins wrote back. “Absolutely. I think the list dies after you!” the supervisor responded.

The commander of the Northeastern District, Richard Worley, asked Jenkins if he could teach his tactics to other officers: “If we could get the rest of the ops teams even close to your production [it] would be a win for the city. Is there something you can teach or train the other units? Can we have other units or officers tag along with your team? Any suggestions would be appreciated.”

“Thank you sir, it’s all work ethic,” Jenkins replied. “One out of ten give their all because it’s the right thing to do. People need us and luckily I’m able to hand pick detectives. I want the ones that still work on fixed positions, run without back up, chase the guy in the dark alley. Those few police is what I have and what we need more of.”
