This Vaisakhi, she found her dad in the kitchen, already cooking. Aman warmed up last night’s parathe and the two of them finished off the last of the mango achar. She made a mental note to add the mango achar to the book. She washed the empty jar, but no matter how hard she scrubbed, the tint of haldi remained on the glass, golden in hue.

She rolled out some dough and dropped the little puris into the oil. It was nice to cook with her dad. He always seemed so calm. If only she could have as simple and straightforward a life as him: marriage, kids, a decent job. How easy things would be. He was always talking about the simple joys.

It was the third year that she’d gone to the nagar kirtan with Dad. They arrived in Southall and began to hand out the food. A few kids kept returning for more.

When the food was almost out, her sister joined them. The three of them ate. The puris still had a strong crunch, the imli water overwhelming the mouth, cool and bright, followed by the warm earthiness of the potatoes, onions and chickpeas. Sour, spicy, sweet.
