I WILL BE FREE.

The suffocating Dark around me erupted.

The first thing I saw was the blackness of the sky overhead, which was frightening. There was nothing but dying light coming from the heavens above, shreds of frost in the air, and death far below. I saw Coerce buckled in on herself, shrieking horridly, with trails of shadow leaking from her form where I had broken free. The sound was of a thousand voices in agony.

The tendrils of Dark that had tried to keep me inside her mind fell from my hands, recoiling from the Light. Coerce swirled into mist, retreating from me, vanishing from sight.

My Seership fluttered around me like wings. It shone as brilliantly as the suns at high noon. For a moment, it seemed as if I was suspended in the air, tipping backward, feeling nothing there to stop me from falling.

And then, I did fall.

The world was gone from view as I was surrounded by white flames, resembling a shooting star as I sped downward, my heartbeat pulsing through the sky. For the first time in my life, falling from such a height didn't frighten me. I held my arms wide open, as if I could embrace the entire world, laughing from sheer exhilaration.

See? I wanted to tell everyone. Humans really can fly.

I was free.

I was Light.

The Horde below screeched and writhed in torment. Some of the beasts nearest me frayed away as I dispelled all the gloom, covering everything in an unrivaled brilliance. My body was swathed with every Light Emotion a heart could Feel. Distantly, above my mind-song that had called my flames into life, I could hear cheering down below.

The Charm hovered before me, glowing hot and bright.

And then, turning over in the air, slowing in my descent, I let my feet touch the ground on the very outskirts of the field. My Light dissipated. My Seership fell limp, pressing heavy once more. The Charm remained aglow where it hung from its chain around my neck, a miniature star.

Time to get to work.

Picking up the nearest discarded sword, I sliced it through a monster's throat.

Everything exploded back into motion around me, becoming the chaos of a battle once again, this time the Horde fighting in earnest to defend itself.

Time flowed away from me. When the crescent moon had approached her apex in the atmosphere above, it was all suddenly, startlingly over. The Charm still glowed on my chest, and the night fell hushed as the last tendrils of Dark rolled away, revealing the stars high above, like sigh of relief.

For a moment, we had respite.
