Chapter twelve

“Sit down, I’m just putting the pie in the oven,” Gaia said, a smile in her voice. Drekvic sat down next to me, looking a little shell-shocked. I could sense his turmoil and I reached out to squeeze his hand. No matter what happened, we were stronger together.

Gaia was humming a tune that seemed to lurk just below my subconscious. Her kitchen window overlooked a small meadow, covered in miniature flowers and brilliantly green grass. The sunlight filtered gently through the leaves, a green canopy of light.

After Gaia put the pie in the oven, she joined us at the little farm table, propping her elbows on the surface and smiling at us. She seemed to be happy, her eyes twinkling with unrestrained emotion.

“It’s so good to see you two finally together.” There was laughter in her voice. “But you must be so confused.”

“I know you?” I leaned forward, my heart pounding so loud I was certain she’d be able to hear it.

“Oh, yes, we know each other very well.” She beamed at me and I tried to control the bubbling confusion inside of me.

“How?” Drekvic asked, leaning back into his chair. It creaked slightly, but he didn’t readjust his position.

“All souls are born here and all gods are born here. The souls are created by Moerna and her sisters. Her roots run deep and she tries to place these children where they will thrive best.” She nodded, gently tapping the table, as though petting it.

Moerna creaked around us, a gentle and calming sound. The noise touched a memory so far away that all that was left was a gentle warmth that cocooned my soul. I relaxed unconsciously.

“Fate and Hope were created by Moerna, and she decided that they were strong enough to rule your world. She felt their balance of order and chaos was matched, and that they would be able to share responsibilities. I warned her that having a world with duality at its core would be dangerous, but she liked the idea. Thus, your world was created, a strange place where the balance of order and chaos keeps everything in place. No side is too strong, or the world will tip on its end and the entire thing will come crashing down.”

“That’s what’s happening now,” I insisted. “I’m not strong enough.”

“We’ll get to that, my dear,” Gaia replied, smiling warmly at me.

I nodded and tried to be patient and allow her to finish her story, or was it our history? I glanced at Drekvic, watching him narrow his eyes and bite the inside of his lip.

“When Fate became pregnant, she came to visit me, requesting a blessing for her developing child, and also with a concern. Her magic was weakening. Hope’s light was getting too strong, and her own power seemed to be diminishing. She was confused and afraid, but also…”

“Furious,” Drekvic supplied. “She’d have been angry to see her power shrinking.”

Gaia nodded, her face growing serious.

“Fate wanted her powers back, and she didn’t want the child inside of her to take what was rightfully hers.
