What Happens Behind

Closed Doors

After the meeting in Don’s room, I decided to delay my telling the queen anything. I wanted to make sure Isobel Gowdie delivered on her promise to break the bond between us and the fates so they could no longer see us. It was the only way to see the fairies without the queen knowing. I wished desperately that the queen would just put her feud aside and understand that we had to see the fairies, for Cara. But I wasn’t holding my breath on that one.

On my walk back to my room, I started to question the entire plan. If we broke the spell between us and the fates, wouldn’t the queen know we’d done something? Would she know Isobel Gowdie helped us? What would she do to her? I shook my head as I watched my feet stride across the beautiful burgundy Persian rug.

What did I care what happened to her? Once a monster, always a monster. She deserved whatever she got. Another voice in my head spoke up, though, so soft a whisper I almost missed it. But she’s helping us. She’s putting herself, her place in this kingdom, and her safety on the line just for us to see the fairies and wake Cara. Maybe witches can change, like people. Maybe we’re not so different.

I reached out for the handle to my room but pulled away before going in. A detour was in order. I turned to the room next to mine and leaned against it, waiting. No more than ten seconds later, Jake came walking up, his face lifted in elation at the sight of me.

“Hey, Kammy, wanna come in and hang for a bit?” His toothless smile spread across his face, rounding his cheeks.

“I do, but I need to talk to John first…alone.”

His face fell slightly.

“But only for a minute and then you and I can do something, just the two of us, I promise,” I rambled on in a desperate attempt to bring back his sweet smile.

It returned, but not as jovial and genuine as before. “OK. I’ll be inside whenever you’re ready.”

“Sounds good.”

Jake opened the door and stepped inside. Our eyes connected and we smiled at each other, only as family does to one another, before he disappeared behind the shut door.

“Need something?” a deep voice said from behind me, making me jump.

I whirled around to find John standing so close to me I almost bumped right into him. “What? Oh, no. I mean, yes, actually,” I fumbled over my words as I tried to collect my thoughts quickly. “I need to talk to you in private.”

“Good idea,” he said to my surprise. “I kinda got the feeling there’s some things we need to clear up between us.”

“Something like that,” I said, looking down the hallway one way and then the other. “Come with me.”

We walked past the set of doors I knew were occupied by those in the group to further down the hall. I picked a door at random to open.
