Consciousness fluttered in and out of Yildie like a butterfly trapped in a hurricane lamp. Eventually, memory returned, as did that consciousness, as did pain. She screamed, often. She muttered in her delirium. Eventually, she was able to shape full sentences. She was cossetted as never before. But healing was slow, and the agony of her dismemberment reminded her of other, less physical agonies.

Tarme visited her several times. She had, she informed Yildie, followed her trail to the swamplands where the other crocodile woman was about to lunge upon Yildie. The crocodile-woman had been insensible with grief, hatred gleaming in her topaz eyes at the death of her mate.

“I had no choice but to kill her,” Tarme said to her with some gentleness.

“Neither did I, her mate was about to end me,” said Yildie, her eyes closing involuntarily at the pain. She slid in and out of pain and of consciousness.
