SUPPLIES

• Round brush (size 6 works well)

• Clean water

• 4 colors of paint

• White ink pen

• Size 1 black ink pen

1. Wet only one side of the back of the beetle to begin. On the damp paper, add Cerulean Blue Hue to the outside edges and allow it to move toward the center.

2. While that color is still wet, add a little Gamboge Hue to the center and allow it to mix with the blue shade to create a green. Add a little extra green to the yellow areas using Sap Green. Finally, use Ultramarine around the outside edges to darken the blue. Use your brush to help mix the colors on the paper. Let dry.

3. Repeat the same steps on the opposite side.

4. Fill the head area with water and drop in Cerulean Blue Hue around the edges once again, followed by Gamboge Hue in the center and Sap Green on top of that. Let blend and allow to dry.

5. Paint the antennae, arms and legs with Sap Green. Dot on some Ultramarine to the wider parts. Let dry.

6. Using your white ink pen, start stippling on some highlights to the back of the beetle. The whitest parts should contain more dense dots, allowing them to trail off and separate more as the highlight becomes less intense.

7. Highlight the lines on the body, arms and head and add dots to the face with the white ink pen. With your black ink pen, add shadow detail below the white lines and the dots on the head.
