Hedgehog

Although it doesn’t technically have fur, a hedgehog still has a lot of texture that we can re-create using the fur-painting technique.

For this piece, you will start out with a very light wash as a base and slowly build up the darker tones using small strokes. Leaving white space on the paper will create the white details.

Colors

RAW UMBER

BURNT UMBER

SAP GREEN

Supplies

Round brush (size 6 works well)

2 colors of paint

Fine detail brush

Black Pen

White paint

1. Paint a very light base of water mixed with a tiny bit of Raw Umber pigment over the entire hedgehog.

2. Once dry to the touch, add another layer of the same wash to the face to build the darker detailing as shown in the example.

3. Pull the brush outwards to create sweeping hair detail around the face and area where the body meets the spikes. Paint the ear and feet with Burnt Umber.

4. Using a mix of Burnt Umber, Raw Umber and water, create a midtone brown. Fill the upper body with small strokes to replicate spikes, being sure to leave white areas exposed for highlights.

5. Once that layer has dried completely, add a final layer of a more pigmented Burnt Umber to the upper body.

6. Finish the details in the face with a black pen and fine detail brush. Paint the whiskers with a fine brush and Burnt Umber. You can also add some very thin white strokes with white paint to the body for highlights.

7. Using the Sap Green, add little sprouts and the indication of grass below the hedgehog.
