Next, I will draw the box for the ellipse of the coffee cup. I already have the bottom of this box marked on the centerline. This, of course, was the mark for the bottom of the first unit of measurement. I now need to draw the vertical sides of the box for the ellipse. I already have 1 unit of width marked on the right side of the centerline. I will mark one unit on the left side. But remember, the width of the ellipse was slightly more than 2 units wide so I will draw the vertical sides of the box just slightly wider than the 2 units of width. I am careful to add the same small amount to each side to make sure the box is centered on the centerline.

Before I actually draw the cup and saucer, there is another measuring technique I’d like to show you.
