McMenamins AMERICAN $

(2001 NW Monroe Ave; mains $7-10; 11am-10pm Mon-Wed, till midnight Thu-Sat, noon-10pm Sun) You can’t go wrong with any McMenamins venue, where comfort foods like cheeseburgers and pepperoni pizzas (along with their own microbrews) are served up in creative interiors – check out the amazing copper trellis with painted ceramic sinks here. There is another branch at 420 NW 3rd St.

Beanery COFFEEHOUSE $

(500 SW 2nd St; drinks $2.50-4, snacks $3-7; breakfast, lunch & dinner) Popular corner coffee shop grinding up local beans and offering fine snacks like sandwiches, quiches and pastries. Milkshakes, smoothies and floats too. Live music on weekends, and another smaller branch at 2541 NW Monroe Ave.

First Alternative NATURAL GROCERY

( 541-452-3115; 2855 NW Grant Ave; 7am-9pm) For organic and local foods, go to this natural foods co-op with salad bar; it has another branch at 1007 SE 3rd St.
