Nuuk, Greenland

Present Day

Chapter 11

A hush fell over the briefing room as Maratse finished talking. He looked across the aisle at Petra, knowing she was watching him; his cheeks warmed with her attention. If they had been alone, he would have reached for her, to take her hand, knowing that she would understand the situation he presented, that he wouldn’t have to explain it as he felt he did when he looked up at Emy Breton staring down at him from the platform.

“But you didn’t see him?” she said. Her brow creased as she studied Maratse’s face. “You didn’t go inside the house.”

“Not when I first arrived.”

“Why not?”

“Hmm,” Maratse said, adding a shrug, as if it was obvious. “Biibi had a gun.”

“And then you went for a walk into the mountains.” Emy looked to the commissioner for support, then to Petra, appealing to her as she said, “Gabin Bouchard could have run away while the constable was in the mountains with Biibi. Don’t you think?”

“It’s an island,” Gaba said before Petra could answer. “A small island surrounded by wide stretches of open sea.”

Emy shook her head, not giving up. “He could have run. He could have stolen a boat.”

“He didn’t,” Maratse said, with a quick nod at Gaba.

Emy waved her hand at Maratse and said, “But the story is not finished. You said they needed your help.”

“Iiji.”

“And?” She waited. “What kind of help? Did you give it to them? Constable?”

“I think that’s enough for now, Ms Breton,” the commissioner said, cutting her short with a wave of his hand. “Gaba will take you to your hotel. We can meet again tomorrow,” he said, turning to Maratse. “If you’re available, David?”

Petra bit her bottom lip as Maratse gave it a second’s thought. If she didn’t know him better, she would think he was making a joke, but in his slow and steady way, he was simply confirming that yes, he was available, if the commissioner thought he could be of any help. Of course, Petra saw the twitch of Maratse’s hands, and the flicker of the north in his eye at the thought he might have to return, for the sake of the case.

“Iiji,” Maratse said. “I am available.”

“Then it’s settled.” The commissioner stood up and walked to the platform. He shook Emy’s hand and wished her a good night’s rest, adding, “We’ll do what we can to help you in this matter. But I think it’s best to start again tomorrow. You’re here now. If Gabin…”

“Bouchard,” she said, as the commissioner let go of her hand.

“If he’s in Greenland, I’m sure we’ll find him.”

“With the constable’s help?” Emy asked.

“Of course.” The commissioner gestured for Emy to go with Gaba, then held up his hand as Maratse and Petra stood up to leave. “Just a second,” he said, once Emy and Gaba left the room. “We need to talk.”
