Present Day
Chapter 11
A hush fell over the briefing room as Maratse finished talking. He looked across the aisle at Petra, knowing she was watching him; his cheeks warmed with her attention. If they had been alone, he would have reached for her, to take her hand, knowing that she would understand the situation he presented, that he wouldnât have to explain it as he felt he did when he looked up at Emy Breton staring down at him from the platform.
âBut you didnât see him?â she said. Her brow creased as she studied Maratseâs face. âYou didnât go inside the house.â
âNot when I first arrived.â
âWhy not?â
âHmm,â Maratse said, adding a shrug, as if it was obvious. âBiibi had a gun.â
âAnd then you went for a walk into the mountains.â Emy looked to the commissioner for support, then to Petra, appealing to her as she said, âGabin Bouchard could have run away while the constable was in the mountains with Biibi. Donât you think?â
âItâs an island,â Gaba said before Petra could answer. âA small island surrounded by wide stretches of open sea.â
Emy shook her head, not giving up. âHe could have run. He could have stolen a boat.â
âHe didnât,â Maratse said, with a quick nod at Gaba.
Emy waved her hand at Maratse and said, âBut the story is not finished. You said they needed your help.â
âIiji.â
âAnd?â She waited. âWhat kind of help? Did you give it to them? Constable?â
âI think thatâs enough for now, Ms Breton,â the commissioner said, cutting her short with a wave of his hand. âGaba will take you to your hotel. We can meet again tomorrow,â he said, turning to Maratse. âIf youâre available, David?â
Petra bit her bottom lip as Maratse gave it a secondâs thought. If she didnât know him better, she would think he was making a joke, but in his slow and steady way, he was simply confirming that yes, he was available, if the commissioner thought he could be of any help. Of course, Petra saw the twitch of Maratseâs hands, and the flicker of the north in his eye at the thought he might have to return, for the sake of the case.
âIiji,â Maratse said. âI am available.â
âThen itâs settled.â The commissioner stood up and walked to the platform. He shook Emyâs hand and wished her a good nightâs rest, adding, âWeâll do what we can to help you in this matter. But I think itâs best to start again tomorrow. Youâre here now. If Gabinâ¦â
âBouchard,â she said, as the commissioner let go of her hand.
âIf heâs in Greenland, Iâm sure weâll find him.â
âWith the constableâs help?â Emy asked.
âOf course.â The commissioner gestured for Emy to go with Gaba, then held up his hand as Maratse and Petra stood up to leave. âJust a second,â he said, once Emy and Gaba left the room. âWe need to talk.â
