CHAPTER 14

SITTING on a strip of land bordered by Brumwall, Morvene and Llawnroc, the village of Waukee was a combination of a small farming village and a trading village of a few hundred people. Situated on the river, it also derived a good part of its food supply from the river itself.

Their view of Waukee was perfect. But, as Roth gazed over the village from the large oval plateau of a hill not a quarter mile away, he saw the village was far from the peaceful place Enaid had described. Surrounded by the army of Aldimor, the residents were unseen, and Roth could only hope they were being contained in the huts while Aldimor’s soldiers filled the grounds with their tents and cooking fires.

By a quick estimate, Roth figured the force was perhaps three or four hundred strong. But also knew, when it came to the battle, Namron would have to leave at least a third of his force to prevent the villagers from joining Brumwall soldiers.

Roth’s platoon and Nomar’s two hundred soldiers should be more than enough. Yet, from the very onset of the situation, Roth’s Naval Academy War Planning training, and his intuition told him what he was seeing was less than what presented itself.

He turned to Enaid. “He has at most, four hundred. Does it make sense to you that he brings so small a force if he wants to take Brumwall?”

“Solomon, I—”

Roth shook his head, leaned toward her, and took her hand into his. “I was thinking aloud. It is exactly what I suspected.”

Enaid looked down at their locked hands. His skin was much paler than hers: it was warmer as well. She thought about what he had told her, of the different races, he called them, of the people with different colored skin. How strange it must have been. She raised their hands to her lips.

Releasing his hand, she pointed to the village. “I can’t be certain from this distance, but the one out front, I believe is Namron.”

“Good, then he has seen us arrive, which is what I wanted.” They wheeled their kraals about at the same time and returned to his men. “We make camp here tonight. Tomorrow we fight.”

When camp was prepared, and the cooking fires lit, Roth found Enaid sitting on a storm-fallen tree, slightly bent over and petting Regit. He paused for a moment to take the peaceful sight in. She lifted her head just then and smiled. “And?”

“The men are set up. It is time for me to talk with Namron. Will you ask Atir? Is there a crave nearby?”

“There is no need for a crave. We are close. I have already touched her mind. What words shall be said?”

Roth shook his head slowly. “Whatever you deem proper. I want to meet with him tonight.”

“A reason?”

“To parley ... to talk about a peaceful end to this.”

“Yes, My Lord,” she whispered, her eyes still locked on his.

“Don’t ca—”

She closed her eyes, cutting off his protest. Her entire posture changed. She sat straighter, drew her shoulders back, and she let free a long exhalation.
