I watched Morganis through the mirror the following days. There wasnât much to speak of. Apparently, any plans I could eavesdrop on had already been made. I saw her leaving a meeting with vampires, but I caught her just as it was ending. Being in completely different time zones and still having to go to classes and practice and train meant I couldnât watch her twenty-four hours of the day like I might like to.
For the most part, I didnât let it bother me. She seemed to be relaxing, healing up. I figured that was good. But when I saw Wednesday afternoon that she had just been in contact with vampires, I wanted to at least try to get some answers, so I decided to head down to the basement of Salem Bridge.
The area was creepy, to say the least. It was dark, damp, and covered in cobwebs. The walls were just thick areas of dirt where the actual basement part had been carved out. I could only imagine the reason it hadnât flooded or been destroyed entirely was because of some form of magic, given that we were literally surrounded by water. Still, that didnât stop the entire basement from smelling like wet dirt and the air somehow feeling moist.
The door to the basement was in a room adjacent to the cafeteria that could be considered a kitchen. But it looked more like a kitchen youâd find in a small apartment rather than a school that fed hundreds of people a day. Of course, since everyone was fed with magic, I was surprised there was a kitchen at all. Once you entered the small kitchen, there were two identical doors beside one another. One was simply a closet with some basic cleaning supplies, and the other was a stone staircase that led down into the dim basement.
As I walked down the stairs, goosebumps started to form on my arms. In addition to being straight-up eerie, the air was also chilly. There were some torches on the wall that lit up the area, but the fire didnât seem to provide any warmth. I could only assume it was magic as well because I doubted someone had come down to light the torches just before I ventured down here.
Halfway down the stairs, the stone faded, and it became nothing but dirt. The staircase opened out into a mid-sized room with three branching hallways and two small rooms. I had no idea where Roland would be. I usually met him on the stairs. I glanced into the rooms. They were barely bigger than a closet and held a few old supplies that were covered in cobwebs.
âRoland?â I called, glancing down one of the hallways. I was split between my curiosity about the storage tunnels and what they were like and my desire not to find out. I moved across the open area to glance down one of the other hallways and saw something that I hadnât seen before. I saw Roland coming.
âBona tarda, carinyo,â he smiled as he came down one of the hallways.
