CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Izzy dropped her bag and folded her arms. “You don’t expect us to try and fly around in this thing, do you?”

The oil-smeared mechanic frowned. “I don’t care what you do. That’s all the work I’m goin’ to do on it. Sit your butt on the ground and scoot across the country for all I care.”

The Devil’s Bones now looked more like the Frankenstein’s Bones, as damaged wings and fuselage had been repaired with combinations of differing metals and tapes, creating a patchwork look.

“You didn’t even fix the cloaking system!” Izzy said.

“It works; it just don’t work one hundred percent. You see a few hundred micro projectors layin’ about? We work with the parts we got, lady.”

Izzy inched closer. “Lady? How old do you think I am?”

The man began to answer, but Sverre clapped him on the back, interrupting him. “Believe me, don’t answer that unless you want to forget the last five years of your life or act like a monkey for the next week.”

Malcolm looked out from the side door. “We getting this show on the road or what?”

“When the hell did you get here?” Izzy asked.

“About five seconds ago.”

“I’ve checked over our supplies. We have enough to last several days, but we’ll have to acquire more if we wish to stay gone longer than that,” Jessica said as she walked down the rear loading ramp.

“Leave that to me,” Angel said as she munched on a bag of chips. “Hey, that giant lady is here.”

“I heard your training with Master was fruitful,” Faith said.

“Yes. I’m more prepared to meet the challenges ahead of us,” Jessica replied.

“Good. I don’t need to tell you how important this is. I just wanted to see you off and to offer you my prayers. Will you pray with me, Jessica?”

Jessica smiled. “Of course, Faith.”

“I’ll be inside,” Angel said as she left in a huff.

“Will you pray with us as well?” Faith asked Sverre, Malcolm, and Izzy.

“I’m not really...” Sverre began to say, but Izzy pulled him over toward Faith and Jessica.

“Sure. I was raised Baptist, but I don’t really pray much these days. I figure it don’t hurt to send up a prayer every now and then in case the big guy’s listenin’,” Izzy said.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been to church with my family, but I miss it,” Malcolm said as he joined them.

Faith closed her eyes and bowed her head. “Lord, bless this group and our efforts to protect your earth and its people. We pray that you will guide our actions and fill us with your spirit. We pray that you will give us the strength to defeat the evil that is spreading across the land, and to heal the people after this war is over. In Jesus’ name, we pray, amen.” She opened her eyes and smiled. “Now, let’s get you the hell out of here.”
