Thirteen – Fortify

The sound of boots pounding the ground and a cart being wheeled away made it clear they’d opted to escape. It was a gamble but at this stage; they didn’t know what had caused the blackout, and it certainly wasn’t worth dying or going to jail over. The second I saw them leave, I sprinted towards the side exit with Chase in tow and went to assist Marlin and Kai. By now Kai had managed to get inside the Jeep and grab a rifle. Both of them had dropped to the ground and were squeezing off shots as we rushed over.

“Stop shooting for a minute.”

“Are you kidding, those mother—”

“Wait,” I said watching intently as the silhouettes of the three individuals joined their group and loaded what they had from the cart into the truck. A minute or two passed before their engine roared and they tore out of the parking lot at high speed.

It was an intense moment and all four of us stayed on alert just in case they had second thoughts and doubled back.

“Listen, let’s grab what we have and get the hell out of here. I don’t know how many more of them there are but I doubt it will be long before others show up looking to loot. It’s only going to get worse.”

I hopped into the Jeep and brought it up to the side door. Marlin and Kai remained with the vehicle while Chase and I dashed inside and gathered together the carts we’d filled up. Once the goods were loaded in the back, I cast a nervous glance over my shoulder and then hopped into the driver’s side.

Within a matter of days the place would be ransacked. This was only the beginning. People would arm themselves and next time the outcome might not end well.

The only positive to come out of the evening was that no one had got hurt. The thought of taking someone’s life remained at the forefront of my mind as we drove back. What if I had killed someone, could I have lived with that? It was one thing to be trained on how to kill, another to actually do it.

“So that guy Markus. He was with them,” Chase said.

“Are you serious?” Marlin barked. He was riding in the passenger seat and glanced over at me. I knew I was going to get an earful from him. “I knew we shouldn’t have let him go. That bastard has probably been following us since Todd’s place. Which means…”

“The house.” My mind swirled. “They might know about Mack’s place.”

I put my foot down and gave it some gas.

Out the corner of my eye I could see Marlin’s knee bouncing up and down, his other hand was holding a Glock and he was acting all twitchy. It was the adrenaline pumping through his system. All of us were wired.

“You know, if this is what we think it is, there is going to come a time when we’ll have to make that decision.
