The sound of the snake’s rattler persisted, though now it was louder as they crawled towards the shaft of light. Matt reached around to his back pocket and pulled out a long piece of iron that he was planning to use for protection against the guards. What made it hard was the lack of light. Alisa moved in close to Matt. His heart was pounding in his chest. Sweat trickled down his forehead. For a brief few seconds he wanted to turn back but any movement at all was liable to make the snake lash out. Now he could hear it moving, getting closer. Shit.

Right then in those tense few seconds before what he imagined would be a painful bite, a gunshot went off. He thought Ted was going to wait for him to get outside before he took action, obviously not.

“Let’s go,” Matt said. It was now or never. He crept forward fully expecting to get bit as the sound of the rattler intensified, this time to his left side. Whether the snake turned, or chose not to bite, or perhaps his hearing was making him think it was closer than it actually was, no bite came. They reached the edge and he slammed the iron into a gap between the wooden slats, forcing them outwards. Alisa was the first one through, and then he scrambled out and shook off the dirt. Alisa hurried over to the corner and peered around. Coming up the slope, and moving at a fast speed was a dune buggy. It kicked up a plume of dust behind it. They slipped around the corner and made their way over to the next structure. As they passed between the two buildings, Matt gazed back to see Ted wrestling with a man’s rifle, while the other two, and one more person had subdued the other one. Ted momentarily glanced his way before he head-butted the guy. He now had a rifle. The others grabbed what looked to be a Glock from the one on the ground and they backed up into the building, Ted slammed the door closed.

The two of them circled around the building staying out of view. The dune buggy came up and two men jumped out with rifles and hurried up to help their buddies.

“Now!” Matt said, rushing out in a crouch, only to break into a full sprint. Just as they made it to the vehicle, one of the men spotted them.

“Hey!”

Sure enough the guy had left the keys inside. Matt turned it over, slammed it into gear and jammed his foot against the accelerator. The engine roared as they took off like a bullet. Several rounds snapped past them, followed by an addition flurry. He’d never driven off road before and sure as hell hadn’t been in a vehicle like this. It bounced over the bumps and he veered it in the direction of a dirt road that would lead out to 395. Alisa kept looking back to see if they were being chased but it was hard to see anything with all the dust being kicked up.
