CHAPTER THIRTEEN

THE MORNING DAWNED fresh and clean, the air so clear it seemed to sparkle. Lia had woken early, deciding to go for a walk around the property where she had grown up. She had a strange desire to stick her feet in the dirt, to feel the dew on her face as she had done as a small child. Pulling her hair back into a low tail, Lia let herself out the back door. As her feet touched the grass of the back yard, she smiled. She stood for a moment, and closed her eyes. Taking a deep breath, she drew the cool, fresh air deep into her lungs. Opening her eyes, Lia started walking. She headed toward the stream midway through the property. It was near this stream that Lia and Rissa had first met Tony.

Lia sat down on the bank above the stream, listening to the water as it bubbled over the rocks. Wisps of heavy mist wafted over the field in front of her, obscuring the other side. The top of the Dryad’s tree could just be seen down to the left. Birds were singing to welcome the new day. Lia lay back, nature’s morning soundtrack lulling her into a heavy doze. It had been a long time since she had truly relaxed. She was slowly realizing how very stressed she had actually been. She had forgotten what it felt like, to forget worry, to just be.

After some time, Lia felt someone approaching and turned her head towards them. She shielded her eyes as she looked up. The sun had risen over the field and the mist had burned away. She had rested for longer than she had thought. Tony sat down beside her, resting his arms on his knees. He looked off across the field. Lia looked away and put her arm over her eyes.

“It’s really beautiful here in the morning,” Tony commented. Lia remained silent. Tony continued to stare straight ahead. “When you left, I don’t think anyone thought that you would stay away for so long. Everyone thought you would last maybe a year or two, realize what you had left behind, and come back. I guess we never thought you would get married or have kids outside the magical community. Why would you? The magical community is the most awesome place to grow up, right?”

“Maybe for those that fit in,” Lia snorted. “I wasn’t one of those lucky ones. Do you know how hard it was, knowing that I had no talent, that I never fit in, that everyone was pitying me or laughing behind my back? Knowing what a disappointment I was to my parents?”

Tony looked at Lia. “No one who knew you was laughing at you. And the only disappointment was in knowing that you couldn’t see yourself as the strong, beautiful person we all knew you were. And you do have talent, more than most witches around here, maybe even in the country. You just won’t let yourself feel it.
