May I Understand That All Phenomena Are Illusions
As the last verse explains, for this practice to be authentic, we have to keep it uncontaminated with interfering concepts that can creep into our minds—the desire to be praised by others or to have it make us immediately cheerful and so on:
May I keep all these practices free from conflation
With the stains of the eight worldly concepts and,
By understanding that all phenomena are illusions,
Be released from the bondage of clinging.
The essence of the last verse is about the ultimate bodhichitta, which has to be free from all concepts and limiting extremes and then, as it says, all of these practices, including the cultivation of the relative bodhichitta that we have contemplated in the preceding seven verses.
From my experience, I think it’s very useful to explore the two bodhichittas in more depth by studying Entering the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life.
