Martin grew up as the middle child in his family in Atlanta, Georgia. Being a noticeably exceptional student, he skipped ninth and twelfth grades and entered college at the age of 15—without having formally graduated from high school. After finishing his education, he married a woman named Coretta and took on his first position as a Baptist minister. Martin also became a civil rights activist early in his career. As a member of the executive committee of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), he accepted leadership of “the first great Negro nonviolent demonstration of contemporary times” in the United States.

During these days of peaceful protest, Martin was arrested, his home was bombed, and he was subjected to personal abuse. Yet in the midst of all this he emerged as a leader of the first rank. Martin traveled over six million miles and spoke over 2,500 times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and action. At the age of 35, Martin was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and discrimination through civil disobedience and other nonviolent means—the youngest man to have ever earned that distinction. But on April 4, 1968, Martin was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. His work set the stage for more change to come, and his memory lives on as one of the greatest orators and champions of human rights in American history.
