Warrington,

I had hoped that by the time I wrote, I would be informing you I was to be returning home the following day. That is my desire. However, something has occurred here that requires my attention. As much as I wish I could turn my back on this matter, I realize I cannot, in good conscience, leave before this newest mystery is solved.

Mystery, you may well ask? Well, allow me to inform you.

Upon my arrival five nights ago, I expected to find my father-in-law in bed, so ill he was very nearly dead. However, that was not the case. He was up and well, and to be quite honest, I became angry that they had lied to me. I have since learned Mr. Sedgewick had indeed been quite ill previously, and I have seen his condition alternately deteriorating and improving as the days go by.

What struck me as rather strange was the fact that he always seemed to fall ill after he had eaten a meal. After removing certain foods he always enjoyed, he began to improve. I believed we had discovered what ailed him. However, at dinner last evening he fell ill once again, with the same symptoms, the same terrible, sudden sickness. Which made me wonder…was it possible it did indeed have something to do with the food, or rather something that was added to the food?

The servants here seemed surprised when I understood parts of the concoction the doctor has been giving Mr. Sedgewick. That causes me to realize I may very well be the only person in the house who could detect something added to the food that is not, in fact, edible. I worry I am going to find something sinister here. The word “poison” continually creeps into my thoughts.

I will remain in this place until I feel as if I have resolved the situation. I fear there is more to this matter than meets the eye, that something dark lies beneath the surface. Perhaps I have noticed it more readily than others would, having lived in a state of constant suspicion and curiosity for the past few months with the various cases I have been investigating… For no one else has voiced the idea that it could be intentional, that someone could be behind the old man’s illness.

And now I must end this letter, as I hear the approach of Mrs. Reynolds, the housekeeper, and I am certain she has news of Mr. Sedgewick… Please inform Mrs. Bell my hope is to resolve events here within the next few days, and ask her to prepare the house for our return.

I signed the letter and set down my pen just as the sound of a knock reverberated against the door for a third time.

“My apologies,” I said, turning in my seat. “Please, come in.”

It was indeed Mrs. Reynolds, and she slipped into the room.

“How is he?” I asked, not bothering with pleasantries. None of us had had enough sleep, and I knew that she likely had as little patience as I did.
